Heritage listing for former coal mine
A former coal mine in the Bowen Basin is the latest addition to the Queensland Heritage Register.
Queensland Heritage Council Chair, David Eades, said the Bowen Consolidated Colliery in Scottsville was one of the earliest and most intact former underground coal mines in Queensland.
“The Bowen Consolidated Colliery was established in 1919 and became one of the first successful mines in the Bowen Basin,” Mr Eades said.
“The site which covers almost five hectares includes a fascinating collection of buildings, machinery and even a railway that together tell the story about how people lived and worked on the mine site.
“Many of the buildings are still intact including the single men’s barracks, the bathhouses, the lamp shed where the men picked up their lamps before going underground, workshops, stores, sawmills and remnants of machinery that kept the mine going.
“It tells the story of a self-sufficient unit where they lived and worked on site - even the mine manager’s residence and office was there.
“The mine was such a big business that it developed its own township nearby, now called Scottsville.”
The former colliery was identified through the statewide heritage survey which is being carried out by the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s Heritage Branch.
”It’s one of only two relatively intact former mines known to have survived from the early days of coalmining in the Bowen Basin, the other being the former Dawson Valley Colliery in Baralba which was listed in October this year,” Mr Eades said.
“Heritage listing will help to conserve the important heritage values of both of these sites which demonstrate the evolution of coal mining in Queensland.
“The Department of Environment and Resource Management will work with the owners of the Bowen Consolidated Colliery to conserve this living museum.”
Bowen Consolidated Colliery is located on the edge of the township of Scottsville, approximately 3.5km south-west of Collinsville, and 75km south-west of Bowen.
