Dr McKay works as a consultant historian and curator and recently was co-author of the Queensland Parliament House Conservation Plan. She previously worked as a senior curator at the Queensland Museum. She has worked as a historian and heritage consultant and was the consultant for a National Estate study of war memorials for the Australian Heritage Commission.
