Miners’ souls rest with state heritage register
Burials will continue despite the recent heritage listing of the Collinsville Cemetery.
The Queensland Heritage Council (QHC) has made that assurance, saying new burials and the care of headstones and surrounding grounds was part of day-to-day operations.
QHC is the state’s independent advisor on heritage matters and decides what places go on the Queensland heritage register.
The QHC added the Collinsville Cemetery to the Queensland heritage register because of the part it plays in telling the state’s coal mining story.
The cemetery contains the graves of seven men killed in an accident at Collinsville State Mine in October 1954.
“Telling the stories of Queensland’s wealth as a result of mining only tells one part of the industry’s story; this cemetery reminds us of the dangers involved,” said QHC member Christine Campbell.
