No state heritage listing for Low’s Lookout
The Queensland Heritage Council has voted against state heritage listing of Low’s Lookout at Coolum.
Heritage Council chair David Eades said today the lookout and picnic shelter at the end of Grandview Drive were considered of local - rather than state - importance.
"There's no doubt that the place offers a fabulous view and a view that’s appreciated by many in the community: more than 100 signatures were received in support of the nomination for heritage-listing."
"But the Heritage Council must weigh nominations up against specific criteria and consider the significance to the state as a whole."
"Low's Lookout is not on the tip of the tongue of visitors to the Sunshine Coast. In being such a well-kept secret, a place that locals alone know about, its state place in the story of tourism development is diminished."
Mr Eades said the Heritage Council's decision in no way reduced the place in local history of David Low and his brother Tom; both descendents of Yandina pioneer James Low. David Low served the community in both state and local politics. Ted Low was the council foreman responsible for the construction of the road to the lookout.
"The Heritage Council will be recommending to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council that Low's Lookout be included on its local heritage register – and cared for accordingly," Mr Eades said.
