No state heritage listing for Globe Hotel
The Queensland Heritage Council (QHC) has voted against entering Barcaldine’s Globe Hotel in the Queensland Heritage Register.
QHC Chair, Professor Peter Coaldrake, said while the hotel, located on the corner of Oak and Willow Streets, is of strong local significance it did not meet the criteria for state heritage listing.
“The Globe Hotel dates from an important period in Barcaldine’s history, however alterations to the building over time have reduced its intactness and thereby its’ potential State significance,” Professor Coaldrake said.
“While the Globe demonstrates the pattern of hotels being established near railway stations, the place is not considered an exceptional Queensland example of this common occurrence.
“The Globe Hotel had some links with the labour history of Barcaldine but this was mainly through its association with previous owners and local Labor identities, Owen Devery and more recently Pat Ogden, rather than the building itself.
“While these associations are locally important, the QHC did not consider them of State significance,” he said.
Professor Coaldrake said the QHC recognised the importance of Barcaldine’s streetscape as a classic outback town.
“The Heritage Council is keen to work with the Barcaldine Regional Council to develop strategies that will assist them in preserving the town’s iconic heritage values,” he said.
The Queensland Heritage Council is the State’s independent advisor on heritage matters and determines what places are entered in the Queensland Heritage Register.
Places that are entered in the Heritage Register are considered of importance to Queensland’s history and are protected under heritage legislation.
