Oaklands Sugar Mill Remnants, Caboolture (1865-1872)
Established by Captain Claudius Buchanan Whist at his Caboolture River plantation, the Oaklands Sugar Mill produced some of the first commercial quantities of sugar and high quality rum in Queensland. In-situ bricks, mound features and depressions on the site are suggestive of substantial structural foundations concealed just below the current land surface. This place has been entered into the heritage register as an archaeological place because, with further archaeological investigation, it has the potential to answer important research questions relating to early sugar processing in Queensland.
