Old Government House scoops Heritage Award gold but small regional projects not lost
One of Queensland’s most recognisable colonial buildings, the beautifully-restored Old Government House, has made a clean sweep of the Queensland Heritage Awards.
Governor Penelope Wensley tonight presented Queensland University of Technology with the Queensland Heritage Council Gold Award for its restoration and adaptation of the 1860s sandstone building.
Old Government House’s curator Dr Katie McConnel received the Governor’s Heritage Award for a 21st century take on the place; a multi-media interpretative display including touch-screen kiosk, mini-documentary and 3D timeline.
Age-old skills and technology combined to earn Old Government House the much prized John Herbert Award.
The Queensland and Bendigo Bank Heritage Awards are presented by the National Trust of Queensland, in partnership with the Queensland Heritage Council.
Nineteen heritage places – from Goomeri to Ingham, Peel Island to Surat – were recognised tonight in three award categories:
- Queensland Heritage Council Awards, honouring conservation works on places entered in the Queensland Heritage Register
- Governor’s Heritage Awards, recognising heritage projects and conservation on places which are not entered in the Queensland Heritage Register
- National Trust Community Awards paying tribute to extraordinary voluntary work by individuals or organisations.
Queensland Heritage Council member, architect Ruth Woods noted that Old Government House was the first major project completed by the newly formed colony.
"How fitting that it should be brought back to its former glory in time for the 150th anniversary and brought to life for future generations to understand and enjoy," Ms Woods said.
National Trust president John Jackson said he was impressed by the range and quality of entries drawn from across the state.
"Some have been completing conservation works on their properties, while others have been involved with special projects that promote and interpret Queensland's history," Dr Jackson said.
