State heritage listing for Dalby Fire Station
The Dalby Fire Station has been entered in the Queensland Heritage Register.
Queensland Heritage Council Chair David Eades said the fire station, located on New Street, demonstrated the evolution of fire fighting services in the state's regional towns.
"Built in 1935, the core of the Dalby Fire Station is the oldest surviving, and longest operating, fire station in regional Queensland," Mr Eades said.
"The fire station demonstrates the principal characteristics of a regional 1930s fire station. It was built in a central location in the town, it provides ground floor accommodation for the fire appliances and operational facilities and first floor living accommodation for the chief fire officer."
The 1935 core comprises a two-storey brick, steel and concrete structure with a classically influenced street façade. An extension along its western side was built in 1953, and another at the rear in 1976.
"The 1935 Dalby Fire Station core and its 1953 and 1976 additions are good examples of the evolving functions of a regional fire brigade which has operated continuously from this site since 1920," Mr Eades said.
The 1935 core was designed by Toowoomba architect Matthew Williamson who was responsible for a number of other substantial buildings in the area during the 1930s.
"The fine ensemble of public and commercial structures built in the town centre during the 1930s, of which the 1935 core of the Dalby Fire Station was a part, is largely gone now in 2010, making the fire station a rare aspect of Dalby's cultural heritage significance."
The Queensland Heritage Council is the state's independent peak body and advisor on heritage matters and determines what places are entered in the Queensland Heritage Register.
Places that are entered in the Heritage Register are considered of importance to Queensland's history and are protected under heritage legislation.
